Samsung kept saying that “Exynos is back”, but honestly – they never left in the first place. They are still the closest competitor to the best chipset available in the world right now – and Samsung is also promising a lot of power in the new Exynos 2100 that’s found inside the new Galaxy S21 that will be announced on 14th January.
But, Samsung also created a special announcement specifically for the new Exynos chipset. The entire announcement is shorter than 15 minutes in total and mostly talked about specs and its technical details, including the architecture of the new Exynos 2100.
A few key highlights – the Exynos 2100 is fabricated using 5nm lithography process and it is using a tri-cluster CPU architecture with this GPU:
- ARM Cortex-X1 core (customized for Exynos through Cortex-X Custom program, in close collaboration with ARM)
- 3x Cortex-A78 cores
- 4x Cortex-A55 cores
- ARM Mali-G78 (14 graphics engines)
Samsung also promises 30% better CPU performance, 40% better GPU performance, and 3x the NPU performance for image recognition.
There’s also a brand new SoC governor called AMIGO (Advanced Multi-IP Governor), which controls how much performance to boost. This, in turn, can push for the performance that only the app needs and nothing more so that it won’t waste energy.
And of course, since it is an SoC, the cores are not the only thing that impacts the overall performance and user experience. There are codecs, DSP, ISP, and many other aspects that are affected by an SoC.
