Day after day, it seems like Samsung just can’t keep their focus and start spewing devices at every smallest little segment of the market.
This time around with Samsung’s latest GALAXY Tab S, it’s aimed directly at the iPad (again) but with added accessories, it can be in the same market as Microsoft Surface tablet PCs.
Samsung is offering the GALAXY Tab S in two different sizes – 8.4-inch and also 10.5-inch variant, both with slightly different specs.
Right off the bat, you can see that the GALAXY Tab S 10.5-inch looks exactly the same as the GALAXY NotePRO which we reviewed earlier and that’s no surprise since it is a decent design.
The 8.4-inch version of the GALAXY Tab S however looks a little like the iPad mixed with the GALAXY S5 in a very Nexus 7-ish design. The gold coloured edges have to go, by the way.
Oh – before I forget, the capacitive and physical home keys really have to go away forever.
Let’s start with a simple technical spec sheet of both the models.
- Samsung Exynos 5 Octa core or Qualcomm 800 2.3GHz quad-core processor for both models
- 8.4-inch or 10.5-inch Super AMOLED display with 2560×1600 pixels
- 8MP rear-facing camera, 2.1MP front-facing camera
- 3GB RAM, 16GB or 32GB internal memory, microSD expandable up to 128GB
- 802.11ac WiFi support
- Android 4.4 KitKat
Alternatively, Samsung did a very good job in this infographic for the 10.5-inch version.
For once, Samsung is attempting something different by not stripping off any of the good hardware when it comes to size reduction. The 10.5-inch version is an exact bloated up version of the 8.4-inch version with a larger battery – and that’s great for those who seek different sizes with no compromise in hardware.
Well, sure Samsung has a lot of magnificent stuff offered in the phone right? Maybe so, as they now have included the GALAXY S5’s user interface to all of their latest devices, as seen even on the GALAXY NotePRO.
Further “freebies” that Samsung touts is their GALAXY Gifts, with a bunch of free-for-few-months subscriptions and even with Marvel Unlimited now, providing you 3 months trial subscription of Marvel Unlimited digital comics.
The accessories? Samsung took an interesting turn this time. There’s a Book Cover (available for both sizes) that can offer 3 modes – viewing, touch, and typing.
There’s also a simple cover which offers nothing more but just a simple hard cover for the device, and it’s also available in both sizes.
The last and definitely not the least is the keyboard dock specifically for the 10.5-inch version and works a la the one on ASUS Transformer devices – and come to think of it, it looks exactly like the one used on the GALAXY NotePRO too.
All I can say is that it’s classy as heck when it’s closed – except for that perforated back of the tablet.
Pricing and availability of the GALAXY Tab S is not yet available in Malaysia, but stay tuned as we’ll bring the news to you when it arrives.
Till next time.
