While I was scrolling on Twitter recently, I saw a video that was automatically playing on the timeline. It was mesmerizing and trippy, so I tapped on it. It’s the new ad for the Samsung Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71 – and even the music is catchy. There are only 3 phrases in the lyrics – “awesome screen”, “awesome camera”, and “long-lasting battery life”.
So what does Samsung have to offer to claim the phrase “awesome camera”? Well, both the Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71 have a quad-camera setup at the rear, and they both have the same selfie cameras. Here’s a summary:
|
Samsung Galaxy A51 |
Samsung Galaxy A71 |
||
| Quad rear-facing cameras | Main camera |
48MP f/2.0 with PDAF |
64MP f/1.8 with PDAF |
| Ultra wide angle camera |
12MP f/2.2 |
||
| Macro camera |
5MP f/2.4 |
||
| Depth sensor |
5MP f/2.2 |
||
|
Selfie camera |
32MP f/2.2 |
||
With that in mind, the biggest difference between the two cameras here is only the main camera. The Galaxy A71 has higher resolution and performs better in low-light because of its larger aperture.
What I’m surprised about here is the macro camera. Samsung upped the ante by including a 5MP macro camera – which is helpful in this case since we are big fans of texture photography. With the 5MP macro camera, we can take even clearer, more detailed pictures of textures.

Take for example – fabric. The way fabric is weaved is just satisfying to look at. When it’s stretched, the lattice moved together. While it looks gapless, there is a gap between the threads so that threads can pass through when sewing. Fabric with higher thread counts results in smaller gaps and a completely different feel too.
For the most accurate digital recreation of any texture is by photographing it. Once the texture is photographed, it can be used as 3D model textures.
Macro photography can also be used for educational purposes – like learning how velcro straps work. It’s easy to explain with words – the fabrics formed “loops” which the bristles “hook” on the “loops”, thus the adhesion.
It’s difficult to visualize through words – so why not see it with our own eyes with the help of the Samsung Galaxy A51 or Galaxy A71’s 5MP macro camera?
Here’s another example. Looking at the world through a macro camera really does open up a whole new perspective on how we look at things. The tiny details do matter.
And yet the Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71 are very affordable too. We’ve talked about the specs here. For the price of RM1,299 and RM1,799 respectively, it’s a good deal. They are both available in the beautiful Prism Crush Blue color which I absolutely love. Both the new Galaxy A smartphones are also available in a total of 3 colors, as listed below.
