As billions of electronic devices get manufactured every year in the modern era, it is crucial to consistently recycle materials to reduce material cost during production or upcycle end-of-life items for other usages which Samsung has taken the latter strategy to help the ophthalmic health sector.

Partnering with Yonsei University Health System (YUHS) and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), Galaxy smartphones that are no longer in commercial use are repurposed to help address around 1 billion vision impairment on a global scale with estimation around at least 2.2 billion recorded cases which half of these are actually preventable with the proper diagnosis.

As such, the EYELIKE handheld fundus camera that is usually very costly to deploy and used to detect conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration can be powered by Galaxy devices by utilizing the onboard lens and additional AI algorithm to analyze and diagnose the images for ophthalmic diseases and connects to an app that accurately captures patient data and suggests a treatment regimen at a fraction of the cost of a commercial instrument.

By lowering the entry cost and cost-effectiveness of detecting ophthalmic diseases, people around the world will be able to access these services while addressing environmental issues – a commendable and big brain move by Samsung. The electronic giant is currently researching the feasibility of applying the same strategy to colposcopes that target women healthcare specifically.

If the rate of e-waste landfills getting piled up can be slowed down like this, a big thumbs up and full support from me from the bottom of my heart.
