As Samsung’s brand new foldable and flippable smartphones namely the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G and Z Flip3 5G rolls out around the world, the company has shared a new video where designers and industry partners come together to bring app optimization towards these 2 devices with unorthodox display ratios and resolutions.

Sometimes the tasks aren’t as easy as you might think. Sure, resizing the overall window size and scaling/descaling according to the mode the device is currently in is technically the same thing under the hood as your own standard Candybar style smartphone’s rotating function. Taking the Galaxy Z Fold3 as an example, the phone itself expands in the horizontal area instead of vertical so app designers are required to pour in extra effort and brainpower to determine how to properly display content efficiently rather than just resizing everything in proportion to the current screen resolution.

The nature of the app in question also contributes to the number of things to factor in during the optimization process such as news and article websites are adjusted to display more elements but in a more creative way such as displaying 2 different posts, one each on either side of the screen so that readers could read, compare and contrasts if they wished to, or just read more news with reduced scrolling.

The philosophy and design language for the Galaxy Z Fold3’s app UI is fairly straightforward as most of the internal designers agreed to the idea of multitasking by simply running 2 apps at once or dedicate the extra screen estate to display more critical information at once. However, the Galaxy Z Flip3 provides another layer of a challenge since it is folded vertically so instead, they are focusing on delivering the most practical user experience when folded.

Aside from doing things by themselves, they also worked with partners such as Microsoft in order to provide the same level of accessibility in 3rd party apps as well. Taking Microsoft Word as an example, through the Galaxy Z Fold3 users can view up to 4 documents at once and even more, with Microsoft Teams presenters can both write things on the digital draw board on the top part of the screen while the face cams are situated at the bottom with the device being placed horizontally.

As Samsung and its partners continue to bring these optimizations together to form a complete and mature framework of how app development should be done towards foldable/flippable, the brand is confident that they are the future and the next step of the smartphone revolution.
