The system works by forming a chain of four trucks. The lead truck is driven by a human being while the other trucks behind is travelling autonomously. The three autonomous truck will track and follow the leader closely; like a train but without links. The trucks are equipped with cameras and radar to tightly determine the speed and location of the lead truck and as well as other vehicle.

The truck can travel up to 80 km/h. The technology involved was the Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control. Just like the normal consumer Adaptive Cruise Control that was used in cars like Volvo but the truck’s system is programmed to communicate with other system to ensure that they all follow in a single line.

Researchers say that this type of logistic will reduce consumption and increase efficiency since it is controlled by a very precise program instead of a human. Testing says that the truck is now 100% ready to be used it Japanese highway but there are still some inevitable legal barriers standing in their way.
