The science of cloning and genetic engineering is an ultra controversial subject, let alone bringing back an extinct species. National Geographic is taking a step further by featuring their April issue, a video which experts contribute and express their concerns and opinion on the subject. The concept of de-extinction was brought into the discussion making it more and more controversial.
De-extinction is obviously, the opposite of extinction. Instead of cloning one or two mammoth, it will be bringing back the entire population of mammoth. Is it a good idea to do so? Would it effect our ecosystem? Maybe we should study back why they are extinct in the first place.
Tune in to National Geographic Channel at 8 pm EST on 12 April. One hour special “Mammoth: Back from the dead”. As usual, for Nat Geo Asia, the show will air a bit late. Maybe you can find the live channel streaming on the internet.

I think the question of whether or not we should “revive” species needs to be answered on a case by case basis. There are no moral absolutes here. I think that resurrecting one of the gastric brooding frogs is essentially a good idea. Project LAZARUS are already tackling the problem. This species has significant potential for medical research. The genetic resources disappearing everyday due to extinction are immeasureable. What better way to highlight this for the general public than to ressurect a frog which was showing real potential in the field of Gastroenterological research.
Passenger pigeons on the other hand have a pretty decent chance of being viewed as an agricultural pest if we brought them back. It’s hard to justify bringing a species back just so it can be shot as soon as it pillages crops.
Agreed, these scientist are not doing something just for fun. There are tons of research and discovery to be done. It’s in our nature to try and understand everything.
Some of the species go extinct either because of us or some global scale event which is not a part of the natural selection process. Can’t wait to watch and see what they have to say about this.
