Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Tech Summit keynote has come to an end and a lot of things have been announced and showcased including brand new offerings from the tech giant alongside some partnerships with brands that we know and love today.

In this post, we’ll take everything revealed during the keynote and keep them as simple as possible.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1

The very first product to be offered after ditching the triple number naming scheme, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC is Qualcomm’s latest premium 5G mobile platform equipped with cutting-edge 5G capabilities and provides even more performance in the areas of gaming, AI, camera and Wi-Fi to take the experience of flagship smartphones to the next level. OEM partners include Black Shark, Honor, iQOO, Motorola, Nubia, OnePlus, OPPO, realme, Redmi, SHARP, Sony, vivo, Xiaomi, and ZTE have already adopted the chipset with some of them coming out as early as this month.

Here’s a list of the latest tech found within the SoC, made for the nerdy ones.

  • Connectivity – 10Gbps achieved through the 4th gen Snapdragon X65 5G Modem-RF System and over 3.6Gbps over Wi-Fi 6/6E thanks to Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 Mobile Connectivity System
  • Camera – Snapdragon Sight provides the 1st 18-bit ISP on mobile to enable more than 4000x camera data processed at 3.2 gigapixels per second which means 8K HDR in HDR10+ video recording is a reality now. Brand new Bokeh Engine enables Portrait Mode-like effect in video capture while Always-On ISP enables the camera to run at extremely low power consumption to enable always-on face unlocking
  • AI – 2x faster tensor accelerator and larger shared memory for the 7th Gen Qualcomm AI engine to power everything that is neural network-based including Intelligent Bokeh effects through Leica Leitz Look filters, the analysis of user’s vocal patterns through Sonde Health for risk assessment, natural language processing that smartly prioritizes notifications and more
  • Gaming -Brand new Qualcomm Adreno GPU provides up to 30% boost in rendering performance while consuming 25% less energy with Adreno Frame Motion Engine generates more frames while using the same amount of power. Variable Rate Shading Pro enables developers to further tune details for better performance while Desktop-level Volumetric feature enables PC-grade fog and smoke effects on the mobile platform
  • Sound – Implementation of Bluetooth 5.2 and Qualcomm aptX within the Snapdragon Sound Technology system enables CD-quality lossless audio over the wireless spectrum on top of the support towards LE audio features that includes broadcast audio, stereo recording, and voice back-channel for gaming
  • Security – Brand new Trust Management Engine heightens security by providing additional Root of Trust for apps and services. Android Ready SE holds and protects sensitive data from digital car keys, driver’s license, and more with Qualcomm Secure Processing Unit now supporting iSIM that enables cellular network connection with relying on a physical SIM card

Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 Compute Platform

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 Compute PlatformThe portfolio of Always On, Always Connected PCs is expanded through the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 Compute Platform by delivering a robust set of features and computing performance dedicated to ultra-slim and fanless laptops. Built on the 5nm process node, it delivers more than 85% performance compared to last-gen offerings while being 65% more efficient compared to x86 systems working on the same tasks. The GPU also gets an uplift in 60% more frames in games while consuming less power and it now supports 120FPS as well.

Video conferencing capabilities have also been improved with a 15% faster camera startup time and the 3 Autos of Focus, White Balance, and Exposure is now a staple within the platform. If needed, the new chip can handle up to 4 cameras or up to 4K HDR signals at once for the most extreme use cases with AI noise and echo cancellation taking care of the audio department.

Speaking of AI, the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 Compute Platform now delivers more than 29 TOPS of AI acceleration to usher the power of anything deep-learning-based with greater processing speed and efficiency.

While Windows has TPM to store sensitive information, the Qualcomm Secure Processing Unit performs the same job simultaneously with the module to give another layer of protection while things like Secure Boot that verifies hardware and software upon cold booting a system, Windows Hello authentication, and Zero Trust frameworks are all supported.

For connectivity, the 8cx Gen 3 supports the range of Snapdragon X55, X62, or X65 5G Modem-RF systems for up to 10Gbps of connection speed while the Qualcomm
FastConnect 6900 is aided by the Wi-Fi Dual Station, developed in collaboration with Microsoft for Windows 11, for greater Wi-Fi 6/6E speeds all the while enabling the seamless switching between Wi-Fi and 5G networks – perfect for the mobile workers.

Snapdragon 7c+ Gen 3 Compute Platform

On the other hand, the Snapdragon 7c+ Gen 3 Compute Platform is made for entry-tier devices that purely focus on delivering performance with utmost efficiency. It is also not bad on its own as it brings a generational performance uplift of 60% in CPU, 70% in GPU, 6.5 TOPS of AI acceleration, 3.7Gbps of 5G connection speed, and 2.9Gbps of Wi-Fi 6/6E speeds. As it is created for the budget options within the market, expect OEM offerings running this chip to be of extreme value.

Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 Gaming Platform

Qualcomm is also taking a step in making something fully dedicated to the gaming scene through the Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 that delivers superior performance in all sorts of Android games, cloud libraries such as Xbox Cloud Gaming or Steam Remote Play, local network streaming, and more. Consolidating the entire Snapdragon Elite Gaming technologies, the chip is aimed to deliver up to 144FPS and 10-bit HDR gaming experience, low latency connection through 5G or Wi-Fi 6/6E, immersive sound output, precise and general control mapping, and video output up to 4K through USB-C passing through an XR viewer.

Not only that, but Qualcomm also partnered with Razer to introduce the Snapdragon
G3x Handheld Gaming Developer Kit, exclusively to developers starting today and provides anyone that has an interest in making games for the platform with the following specs for a high-class mobile gaming experience:

  • 6.65-inch FHD+ OLED display with 120Hz refresh rate and 10-bit HDR
  • 5MP/1080p60 camera with dual mic to capture player’s face and voice while streaming
  • Balanced and easy to grip controls for comfortable gameplay
  • The associated gaming performance and audio output

Google Cloud Partnership for Connected Intelligent Edge

Last on the list is the collaboration with Google Cloud to provide acceleration for neural network development and differentiation for Snapdragon Mobile, ACPC, XR, Snapdragon Ride, and Qualcomm IoT by using Google Cloud Vertex AI Neural Architecture Search in conjunction with Qualcomm’s AI engine.

The Google Cloud Vertex AI NAS will be integrated into the Qualcomm Neural Processing SDK for developer access to reap optimizations and increase performance for all sorts of deep learning models.
