Yes, you read the title right. “CubeSat Cannon” has been deployed on the ISS. Don’t worry, this particular cannon does not fire deadly projectile or death rays.
CubeSat Cannon is actually used to deploy small satellites into orbit. The cannon is spring loaded which can make jobs for astronauts easier to deploy small cubes of sattlelites into orbit without having to perform very dangerous spacewalks every time. The cube’s dimension is only 10 cm cube which is designed to be cheap and effective for various platforms and to professionals and also students on the ground.
The device was originally named J-SSOD or JEM Small Satellite Orbital Deployer developed by the Japanese space agency. The satellites can be deployed from the Japanese Experiment Module Kibo.
