The world renowned and leading company in hard disk technology is at it again. Western Digital just announced their new and world’s first unique SSD and HDD together in a single enclosure, the WD Black² dual drive.
Measuring at 2.5 inch, this drive packs 120GB of SSD goodness together with that HDD of 1TB freedom. This drive is particularly perfect for laptops and other portable devices since the limitation of drive slots. The hybrid solution is good but not good enough for some users since they want more control over their data. This type of hard disks differentiates itself from hybrid hard disks because the SSD portion of a hybrid hard disk is actually used for cache and the user cannot do anything to it; whereas this WD Black² is actually two separate hard drives that is under total control of the user.
“Our customers told us they like our Solid State Hybrid Drive technology, but our tech savvy users asked for more control of where they store their data,”
-Matt Rutledge, senior vice president of WD’s Storage
It may sound ridiculous at first to stuff a HDD and SSD in a single form factor but if you look it at how small SSD is to replace a laptop’s drive, you’ll be dying for one of these. You can manually organizing which data you will use the most and to keep them in the SSD and storage data like documents and other non essential on the hard disk – meaning you can enjoy the speed of SSD while having the huge space of HDD.
WD will release the drive on it’s official store soon together with other retailers such as Newegg.com and NCIX.com. The drive comes with 5 years warranty and the price will be starting at 299 USD(RM965).
