The internet has evolved so much since the years it became accessible for public use. Today, most of our devices are network enabled such as phones, game consoles, fitness tracker or even for some refrigerator. These devices that are connected to the internet are also filled with our personal information, behavior data and sensor inputs such as microphone or camera.

The internet of things is going to be the next big evolution for consumer electronics. It allows many little devices to be connected to a server for its data sensors to be uploaded and processed. It was projected that this technology could lead to a better and smarter infrastructure for the planet. It may sound exciting and revolutionary; having multiple sensors tracking our daily life with statistical analysis that could lead to better prediction and planning. However, privacy and data security is often overlooked by the users themselves.

End-users are usually not aware that their connected devices require password protection. These devices are manufactured to have a default password and many of us leave it that way. For example, how many of you have properly secured your internet router? Did you know that the standard issued routers from your ISP are set to have a default username and password for administration access. Furthermore, it could be accessed remotely. This could mean that a random person could get into your router by using the default credentials and tamper with your router’s setting or even upload or alter the router’s firmware to behave in favor of the attacker.

With that being said, Symantec is on the edge of getting these devices and their users secured as we are bridging into the era of super-network infrastructure; the Internet of Things. Security is a multi-layer problem that requires multi-layer solutions. First, the data center or the server. Second, the network on which the data is being transported across the vast network infrastructure of today’s internet.  Third and the most important, the end-users; this is where most of it all will fail even with the state-of-the-art security measures are put in place.

Isolation was always the key but then, humans want to be more and more connected with everything. This creates the idea of the Internet of Things. Today, Symantec is offering solutions with their expertise across the different embedded industries. They are focusing to deliver End-To-End security for IoT systems.

However, everything boils down to the users itself. Here are a couple of tips to be aware of your device’s security.

– Perform an audit on the devices you own and what is connected.
– Check if the connected device is accessible remotely from outside and if it needs to be secured.
– Always pay attention on what you grant access to. Especially when installing apps and softwares.
– Regularly check for updates from the official website as they might contain fixes to patch up vulnerabilities.
– Do not take plug-and-play devices for granted. Check every of its settings!
