Our ocean. It makes up the majority of the earth that we are living in – and we definitely need to conserve it. Water is one of the most crucial substances for life sustenance and many of us are treating it as a dump. Hence, TikTok and Conservation International partnered up and say #SaveOurOceans.
TikTok is donating up to USD $100,000 (about RM400k) to help save a total of 3,000 square kilometers of the ocean. Of course, saving the ocean is not just about paying a bunch of money for a cause – but to actually doing something impactful. Hence the #SaveOurOceans movement.
This hashtag has been spearheaded by global celebrities such as Alvin Chong (@alvinchong123), Najwa Nazri (@hinata_hyuga88), and YY Tan (@yytan713) to highlight the critical role of the oceans in the world and why we have to protect them for our future generations.
Now, TikTok, being a platform for short videos, wants you to raise awareness to protect the oceans for a better future through videos.
From 26th August to 9th September, you can use the ocean effect that is available on TikTok. It allows you to virtually “clean plastic” out of the ocean. And you play a role in this too. For every video uploaded with the hashtag #SaveOurOceans, TikTok will donate USD $2 (RM8) to Conservation International to help save 3,000 square kilometers of the ocean.
#SaveOurOceans is a global campaign and users from countries and regions including: the US, the UK, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, India, Japan, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Turkey, MENA, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina and Chile can participate.
The UN estimated that plastic ingestion kills 1 million marine birds and 100,000 marine animals every year. With the current projection, it is predicted that the weight of ocean plastics will exceed the combined weight of all fishes in the seas by 2050. Source here.
