U Mobile has announced a strategic collaboration with OpenAI aimed at making it Malaysia’s first AI-enabled telco through consolidating 5G network with OpenAI’s AI capabilities, with the telco gaining early access to OpenAI’s latest frontier models to jointly develop practical AI applications across the business.
The collaboration was launched with U Mobile CEO Wong Heang Tuck and OpenAI’s Fred Groen, witnessed by Minister of Communications YB Dato’ Seri Fahmi Fadzil, alongside U Mobile CIO Neil Tomkinson and CTO Woon Ooi Yuen.
U Mobile will be integrating AI into its core business to see how it servers customers, supports enterprises, empowers its workforce, and handles cybersecurity. Initial areas of focus include automating internal processes, speeding up software development, enhancing data analytics and data science, supporting more intelligent network operations and cybersecurity, and strengthening brand and digital content capabilities.
The two big names aren’t the only ones getting value out of this, as Amazon Web Services (AWS) will be providing the cloud infrastructure and technical support to help U Mobile develop and scale AI solutions built on OpenAI’s models to enable 4 strategic areas:
- Building AI capability across U Mobile workforces
- Creating more intelligent and personalized customer experiences
- Accelerating innovation for enterprises and ecosystem partners
- Bolstering cybersecurity measures
Specifically for enterprise customers, OpenAI will become an Anchor Partner of U Mobile’s Enterprise Innovation Platform, giving businesses, startups, developers, and academic institutions a way to co-create and test AI solutions using frontier models. The two companies will also explore ways to broaden AI access for consumers and businesses through future products and partnerships, and look at how AI can improve cyber resilience, threat detection, and incident response as part of promoting secure AI adoption across U Mobile’s operations.
