With Malaysia getting more spotlight in recent years in terms of digital economy, the latest UDECO (United Digital Economies) just brought that one step further, as the event was recently concluded in Kuala Lumpur Conclave on July 28, which gathered policymakers, industry associations, fintech leaders, and digital infrastructure providers to discuss how the region can build a more connected digital future.
For those who don’t know, UDECO is a neutral, non-profit movement that aims to unite digital economies without being controlled by any single company or organization. And for that matter, the launch event is hosted by CCESS Blockchain Association Malaysia at TEIZA’s headquarters, with the latter serving as the sovereign digital infrastructure powering the initiative.
UDECO is positioning itself as the collaborative platform that helps translate key agreements into practical digital infrastructure, as ASEAN countries have concluded negotiations for the Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA) in May 2026 that defines common digital trade rules and cross-border data standards.
As for the main highlight of the event, there were the signing of 2 sets of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) designed to expand regional cooperation.
The first saw ACCESS Malaysia, representing UDECO, formalize partnerships with ACCESS Singapore, the Fintech Association of Malaysia (FAOM), and Women in Tech. The move transforms the initiative’s founding coalition into a broader international network focused on advancing ASEAN’s digital economy through collaboration instead of competition.
A second round of agreements was signed by TEIZA with Morpheus, Sole AI, and Ingots. These partnerships extend the Malaysia Digital Consortium ecosystem beyond government and financial institutions into emerging areas such as decentralized AI computing, AI-powered merchant payments, and digital asset trading, further broadening the technologies supporting the initiative.
Beyond the announcements, the Conclave also hosted discussions on two key topics shaping ASEAN’s digital future. One panel explored policy and institutional adoption of Web3 technologies across the region, while another focused on building cross-border payment infrastructure using stablecoins.
Rather than focusing solely on blockchain or AI, the event highlighted a broader vision of digital economy governance where governments, industry groups, financial organizations, and civil society work together to shape regional digital infrastructure. With DEFA expected to be signed later this year, UDECO hopes to provide the collaborative framework needed to support ASEAN’s next phase of digital integration.
