wisee-punch-gesture

Ever dreamed of just waving your hand to switch on the TV from the next room? Well, researchers at the University of Washington have successfully created a prototype of a system that uses Wi-Fi to detect gestures.

Since Wi-Fi signals are capable of passing through walls, WiSee can detect gestures made from neighbouring rooms. Besides that, with a Wi-Fi base station with multiple antennas and MIMO support would be able to distinguish between multiple humans.

WiSee doesn’t require an additional sensor, the software can theoretically be used with any Wi-Fi connected device and a router with multiple antennas to detect Doppler shifts created by movement.

The researches claim that:

The average accuracy is 94% with a standard deviation of 4.6% when classifying between our nine gestures.

Here is the short video for the WiSee:

With WiSee widely used in the near future, this will be very useful either in office or home. Just sitting there and wave your hand to switch on or off the electronic devices around! Then again, will this new technology just make humans lazier?
