As the world goes into “stay at home” mode, we’re all relying on the internet to entertain ourselves. The world’s most popular user-generated video platform, YouTube, is now defaulting all videos to SD resolution to reduce bandwidth usage for a month.
Due to the whole COVID-19 outbreak, everyone is encouraged to stay at home. Social distancing is the key to prevent the virus from spreading. However, it’ll take weeks before we can recover from the outbreak. During this time, our best entertainment platform is – of course – YouTube.
With an uptick of concurrent users streaming videos on YouTube, the company resulted to default all streams in SD resolution to prevent bandwidth hogging. This is done so that more people can watch videos at the same time albeit at lower quality.
I can see why YouTube wants to do this. Even though their services could handle more 1080p video streams, it could be limited by the infrastructure created by our internet service provider (ISP).
However, YouTube is not the only one who is doing this. Since last week, Netflix already took the initiative to reduce the stream quality to prevent bandwidth hogging. I guess we can still Netflix and chill albeit a bit pixelated like JAV.
Another report by Express reported that there is also an uptick of pirates streaming and torrenting shows since the quarantine order was announced.
