In recent days, we’ve seen a literal tonne of smartphones getting spewed into the market every single day. There are phones that are expensive but explosive, and there are phones which you pay more to get less. What if we can tell you that there is one smartphone that balances between all best and most special things on a smartphone? Hint: It’s the Honor 8, by the way. Here are 8 reasons on why you should get the Honor 8, or just skip this entire article and buy it here. I’m fine with that :).
1. Top-class performance
Let’s start off with its raw guts. The engine that powers this beast of a phone. It comes with the latest HiSilicon Kirin 950 chipset – which we did explain with utmost detail here – that features two quad-cores – one at 2.3GHz, and another at 1.8GHz, and coupled with Mali-T880 MP4 graphics. Other than that, it comes with 4GB RAM too.
In short, just know that the Kirin 950 chipset will set you years ahead of its competitors. It’s the first ever chipset to feature a 16nm FinFET+ transistor design, has dedicated dual 14-bit image signal processor (ISP) for its dual camera setup and built-in codec for 4K video.
2. Great battery life; speedy charging
Again – let us bore you with more technical specs, at least just a little bit. In its simplest term, the 16nm FinFET+ transistor that the Kirin 950 is based on, can save a whack-tonne of battery juice because of one fundamental change. Since the battery consumption is lowered, overall temperature of the Honor 8 is lowered too. In turn, that helps to save even more battery. I know it does sound like a paradox – and that’s because it is.
Combining the Honor 8’s 3,000mAh with a fast charging that outputs 9V at 2A charger (or 18 watts), you can pretty much get a couple of extra hours of usage within 30 minutes. What’s not to like?!
3. Dual Camera
Have you heard about the Huawei P9? This is pretty much the same thing, actually. It comes built in with not one – but two impressive 12MP rear-facing cameras. This means that the Honor 8 itself can have depth perception – much like how our human eyes function. It does translate to more flexible and creative photo-taking too – for example, images can be taken quickly and have its focus point changed later.
4. Fingerprint scanner + Smart Key
A year ago, I reviewed the Honor 7. Personally speaking, I absolutely adore that smartphone. It’s smaller in size than other 5.5-inch clunky giants, and has a lot of tricks up its (presumably curtain-sized) sleeve. One of them is something called Smart Key. The Honor 8 has it too – and this time, it comes integrated with the fingerprint scanner. What a slick design!
The Honor 8’s Smart Key can be set to perform 3 different actions, which can be triggered by 1) pressed; 2) double pressed; or 3) pressed and held. There’s an entire playground of things to be done with the Smart Key, such as taking a quick picture by a simple press, or launching Spotify when double pressed. Maybe have it to take a screenshot when pressed and held. Or just turn on the flashlight. It’s your choice – you do you, as the Honor 8 is really customizable.
5. Electrifying Blue
Now, we know that the Honor 8 isn’t the first one to come out with a blue-coloured smartphone – but it’s definitely the first one to come out with the first ever blue-coloured glass-sandwich smartphone. With the two pieces of 2.5D glasses – one at the front and another at the back, it adds in more characteristic in its design with different coloured lights refracted on the Honor 8 itself.
6. Aurora Glass with 15-layer of craftsmanship
Of course, the aforementioned refractions are intentionally created – and it’s an intense process too. Honor had to use 15 layers of pure magic to create a 3D grating effect to give off a one-of-a-kind finish. That’s where the lines of reflection can be seen prominently, but can never be felt.
7. Glass Crack Warranty
So you must be thinking of getting an Honor 8 now. Then a quick thought rushes into your mind – “Since it’s a glass-sandwich smartphone, it can break easily!”. That might be true, so Honor has got your back. It comes with a 3-month warranty for both pieces of glass with no questions asked for one time only. It’s completely free too. So if somehow you do crack the Honor 8’s front or back glass (or both, if you’re having that single most horrible day ever), then you can claim a one-time free replacement for both pieces of glass.
On top of this cracked glass warranty coverage, there’s another 1 year manufacturer warranty too.
8. The price
Phew! The Honor 8 sure does sound fantastic at this point – with great performance, fantastic camera, really useful-yet-convenient feature, and even a glass crack warranty! So you might be wondering – what’s the price?
Here’s the deal – the Honor 8 comes in two different variants. The only major difference however is storage capacity. Both black and white colours comes in 32GB only – which costs RM1,699, whereas the 64GB version comes in its signature blue and gold – which costs RM1,899.
Bonus: It has a 3.5mm audio jack
Seriously, at this point of time, we should be grateful that this jack still exists in our smartphones. At least we don’t have to buy super-expensive accessories like this.
