The day has come as OPPO finally announces the F5 after many weeks of teasing and leaks. With lots of brand new ambassadors and icons that endorse the device and a grand launching that happened a while ago, the OPPO F5 is certainly something to behold, right?

Let’s take a look at the specs first. Apparently, there are a few variants that will be available in the market. The one variant that we know now is this:

  • 6-inch IPS LCD display, 2160×1080 resolution
  • MediaTek Helio P23 chipset with 2.5GHz MT6763T octa-core processor
  • 1/2.8-inch 20MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture lens selfie camera
  • 16MP sensor with f/1.8 aperture rear-facing camera
  • 4GB RAM
  • 32GB storage
  • 3,200mAh battery

Perhaps the most important thing here is the price itself – it’s only at RM1,298. The OPPO F5 is a direct replacement to fill in the void that the OPPO F1s has left since its launch more than a year ago. For what it offers, I think that the OPPO F5 offers a great deal for those who are finding a budget-centric selfie phone.

After holding the phone with my own hands, I can tell that the OPPO F5 is a very light-weighted smartphone with a pretty fancy-looking display. I mean, you are getting the much-hyped 18:9 (empirically it’s 2:1).

The rear-camera bump is actually something that I’m worried about as it is still something that will be prone to damages due to its protrusion. However, we’re not sure if OPPO includes a TPU case just like the F1s.

In terms of first impression, the OPPO F5’s price and screen is looking good thus far – but we’ve yet to test other features like Facial Unlock and its A.I. Beauty Recognition technology in-depth. The latter is a feature that OPPO claims to emulate the abilities of a professional photographer. OPPO also claims that they have over 200 facial recognition spots of a face, so that it can automagically beautify parts of the face most appropriately and effectively.

Let’s not forget that though OPPO touts their Facial Unlock feature, they did not remove the fingerprint scanner. It’s placed at the back of the F5, somewhere around the upper center of the phone. Smart decision by OPPO.

For the price of RM1,298, I think that the price is actually going to disrupt the market again – just like the OPPO F1s from a year ago.

Pre-orders for the OPPO F5 starts now and you can make your orders through OPPO Concept and authorized sales points nationwide, or you can go through OPPO’s own online store or through Lazada.
