Here’s some breaking news for the day. Razer, the world’s famous PC gaming peripheral maker, just acquired Nextbit, a budget smartphone maker. Other than that, you’ll get stereo front-facing speakers too.

That’s some LG G4 standard of hardware for a much lower price – other than the cameras, of course.

Quoting Razer’s press release directly, it seems that Nextbit will still be operating as a standalone company.

According to Razer, Nextbit will operate as a standalone business unit under its own management and apart from the ongoing business of its parent company. Furthermore, Nextbit will continue with product support and software updates for its Robin smartphone.

I’m not quite sure why Razer acquired Robin, actually. There’s one sentence that Min-Liang Tan, the CEO of Razer, said, and intrigued me.

With the talent that Nextbit brings to Razer, we look forward to unleashing more disruption and growing our business in new areas.

Is Razer looking into expanding to the smartphone market? Maybe, and only time will tell.

We’ll definitely update you when we get more information when Razer decides to tell us more 😉
