Let’s be honest here. Many of us are already using Facebook on a daily basis, as if it’s a core integral of our life. Some of us are also using dating services like Tinder and many other services out there, which many of them links back to Facebook. The one question we all have is – why don’t Facebook have their own dating service? Well, the answer is here – introducing Facebook Dating.
It’s a no-brainer for Facebook to launch their own dating service and here it is – arriving to a total of 19 countries today, and Malaysia is one of them. Facebook Dating is wildly different from other dating services since Facebook in itself is a social media platform where friends and family get connected. We surely don’t want to date our family members… and some of us aren’t comfortable dating our friends as well.
This is where Facebook Dating starts differentiate itself from other services as it is built with people in safety, privacy, and discretion in mind. Let’s address them in a bullet point form.
- Facebook Dating is a separate profile on Facebook
Yes, Facebook Dating is still within the main Facebook app itself, but it is using a completely different “profile”. All of your dating activities are not shared on your profile or anyone else’s. - Matchmaking based on common traits
People click with their mates because of some common traits. They act as an icebreaker and Facebook Dating has the ability to suggest you matches based on your preferences, interests, and things you do on Facebook. - Control who can see your Facebook Dating profile
By default, your Facebook Dating profile will only be shown to those who are suggested matches or to those whom you are suggested to. To open up your Dating profile to your Facebook friends, you will have to manually opt in. - Enhanced privacy controls
Within the experience, you have the ability to include or hide friends of friends in your pool of suggested matches. You can also report or block someone if at any point you feel uncomfortable. - Enhanced safety by sharing your live location to keep friends and family updated (coming soon)
It’s scary to go out and meet a total stranger alone at some quiet place. Hence, Facebook will be adding a new feature to share your live location to your friends or family through Facebook Messenger. - Control over gender preferences
Coming directly from a more liberal country, Facebook Dating has been developed with external LGBT Community Organizations and NGOs within our Network of Support which includes GLAAD, Transgender Law Center, and more to bring you the current options for listing your own gender. Facebook worked with these partners so that your gender and interest are safe, inclusive, transparent, and intuitive. - Absolutely free
Facebook Dating is free for everyone to use. Facebook has said that there are no plans for monetizing this service for now.
There is also another great feature for our complex human feelings – and that is Secret Crush. This feature is specially made for those who has a crush but is too shy to talk or confess their feelings to their crushes. Hence, you can add your crush into the Secret Crush list. Don’t worry, they won’t know it’s you who has a crush on them since your profile and name will not be shown.
If your crush added you back on their Secret Crush list, then both your Facebook Dating profiles will be revealed to each other. This skips the potentially awkward confession and rejection phase of confronting a crush.
You can have a total of 9 crushes in your list at once. However, you can only add one new crush per day, but you can remove them at any time.
To start using Facebook Dating, you’ll have to first update your Facebook app to the latest version. Then, manually opt-in to Facebook Dating and create a dating profile. Once again, this Dating profile is completely independent from your Facebook account, though it is within the same Facebook app. Once your dating profile is done, you will see suggested matches. Start adding your Secret Crush and get your love life rolling again – this time with much more control.
