When was the last time anyone is this excited for the launch of a brand new smartphone’s colour? I suppose it’s the Rose Gold (it’s pink, don’t deny), but the hype didn’t really catch on. In the year 2016 however, this phenomena happened again – and still is going on. This time, it’s the colour black. Today, let’s take a look at two smartphones today that is offered in the ever-classy black colour – the Honor 8, and also the iPhone 7/Plus.
Yes my friends – Honor 8 is bringing black back. Midnight Black, to be specific. So black, that its black is black as midnight!
There’s a demand for really black smartphones these days, and the only black (not grey) smartphones are the Honor 8 and iPhone 7 for now. Let’s begin by saying this – not all black colours are the same. There are different ways to show the colour black. Both Honor 8 and iPhone 7/Plus shows their differences very drastically.
We have seen a lot of “news” and “controversy” surrounding the iPhone 7/Plus’s Jet Black colour. It has a glossy reflective finish, and it’s a true fingerprint magnet. This is as expected, since it’s a really flat and shiny surface.
That is a throwback for sure, but Honor was bold enough to create something new for the Honor 8. With a 15-layer craftsmanship and 3D grating effect, reflections off of the Honor 8’s black back is just mesmerizing.
It goes to show how much research and development has gone into creating and showcasing the Honor 8’s black colour, as compared to just tweaking something that was done nearly a decade ago.
Smudges

It has been well-documented at this time, that the Jet Black finish is actually a fingerprint and smudge magnet. Is it a big surprise? Not really, considering that the Jet Black has glossy reflective finish. Apple could have coated it with a few layers of oleophobic materials, but they didn’t.
Honor 8 on the other hand has a much more smudge- and fingerprint-resistant glass. It seems like Honor performed some magic on each piece of glass the the Honor 8 uses, because it brings us to the next segment very nicely.
Scratches & Durability
Surprisingly, the Jet Black’s scratch ability has been highlighted over and over again. Because of how the Jet Black finish is done, it can accumulate micro scratches pretty easily. These micro scratches can be caused by anything – sliding in and out of a pocket, or just laying micro-movements while laid down on the table.

Now, no one likes their black phones reflecting scratches, I understand. And so does Honor. The Honor 8, touts glass quality that is leaps and bounds better than your average glass quality. However, the Honor 8 still uses glass beneath its Midnight Black, so scratches are still possible. But, Honor has another feature to offer.
