Here’s where things get a little interesting – the idea of AI in a smartphone. Why should it exist? Simple – it manages the hardware resources properly and see what’s going on with it. Huawei does have something called Machine Learning Algorithm, or MLA for short, in their current smartphone.
Let’s take a brief look at what it is all about.
The idea behind it is not something new, but Huawei is definitely an early adopter of such feature into their smartphone. In theory, there are two different types of MLA – one that helps you maximize battery, and another that helps you boost performance by optimizing resource allocation. Again, in theory.
Huawei opted for the latter – optimizing resource allocation. Does it work? In terms of performance, yes – definitely. While I was using the Huawei P10 during our review period and I have to say, its performance is definitely as expected from a flagship smartphone. It predicts your usage and allocates resources according to how you typically use the device.
Again, this is different from user to user – so I can’t import my “user profile” that MLA has learned to your smartphone and expect it to work flawlessly. That’s also why Huawei doesn’t have a repository of how apps should be optimized. Also to protect your privacy, by the way.
By dynamically allocating resources, the intelligent MLA assures that your resource-demanding application like 3D games (or even Facebook, which is more memory-intensive now) will have more resource reserved for them to run smoothly. The analogy is rather straightforward – if there’s an arbitrary number of lanes on a highway (let’s just take 10 lanes here) but with inefficient management, then all cars are going to run real slow. MLA’s job is to optimize and manage these lanes so that it would be more efficient and apps that demand more performance will get it without bottlenecks.

Logically thinking, if the MLA should know how to handle background apps properly, right? With fewer background apps sucking up the battery, then the battery life can be prolonged, right? At least that’s the notion that I have – but it’s not so simple either.
MLA steps in to do this in real-time and gets the performance in tip top condition without user intervention. Seamless performance boost.
I mean, who doesn’t want free performance?
