Just when we thought that the latest and greatest Kirin 980 chipset has some redeeming points with its AI capabilities, we are proven to be wrong. A Chinese site tested the new developer platforms for the upcoming Qualcomm 8150 (which is rumored to be the successor or Snapdragon 845) and pitted it against the Kirin 980 in an AI-centric benchmark.

The benchmark tool that was reported here is the AI Benchmark 2.1.1, whereby all of the results in this table are actually extracted from its database. From there, we can see the scores for individual scenarios. The Qualcomm 8150 Developer Platform, which is said to be the successor of the Snapdragon 845, reigns supreme.

Snapdragon 8150 vs Kirin 980 AI Benchmark

In this benchmark, we can see that the Kirin 980 is totally destroyed by the Qualcomm 8150 by a whopping 83%. For a smartphone manufacturer that boasts AI in every single one of their products, their performance in AI is laughable.

Ironically, even Mediatek’s Helio P80 developer platform scored better than the Mate 20 Pro. That just shows how much hard work Mediatek has put in to improve their chipset and just how poor Huawei is doing right now.

What’s even more ironic is that the existing Snapdragon 845 chipset – which is already in the market for a long time – performed better than the Kirin 980 chipset that is focused in AI.

Snapdragon 8150 vs Kirin 980 AI Benchmark disclaimer

Of course, there are a few disclaimers about this result that was published, as shown below. Developer kits aren’t exactly representative of how the final products that uses these chipsets will perform – like maybe the upcoming OnePlus 7 or ZenFone 6z will have a completely diferent score than the Qualcomm 8150 Dev Platform as shown here.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro

We’ve also recently reviewed the Mate 20 Pro right here – and much to our disappointment, the dual-NPU doesn’t seem to benefit any use case at all. Perhaps the Kirin 980 really just isn’t a good design overall?
