The day is 26th March 2019 and today, we are here at Taipei, Taiwan to attend the Smart City Summit & Expo 2019. We have already talked a little about this exhibition here. We witnessed the opening speech which exclaimed that we are on the transition phase to Industry 4.0.

We first started off the life-changing industrial revolution, then towards the electrification and standardization of everything for it to work globally, then towards the computer & automation age which we are living in now. The next age, will be based on the information era with cyber/physical integration – also known as Industry 4.0.

Of course, with so much information and the integration of cyber and physical aspects of life, Industry 4.0 is already revolutionizing a few different aspects of everyday life. A few notable ones are materials, chemicals, medicine, and obviously – the information and communications.

However, to push to Industry 4.0, we will all need help from policymakers, educators, engineers, scientists, medical specialists, and also solution providers. We need the brilliant minds from the world to further improve, innovate, and integrate the technologies into a service that affects people’s life. With that much sensitive personal information and data about each person in the hands of a corporation, the policymakers will have to regulate this situation.

That means everyone plays a role in accelerating the arrival of Industry 4.0. While the name suggests that it is Industry 4.0, it actually affects our everyday life from our homes to our commute – not only public but private transports as well.

We saw TECO’s Smart Cloud application which has retrofitted sensors into a car’s motor to monitor its health and fix the issues before it even arrives. It is currently meant for companies that owns large amount of vehicles – like delivery trucks and buses. In the near future, this technology can be applied to our vehicles as well.

We also see some smart city technologies such as iTrash. Yes, I know the name is a little weird here – but the premise of it is simple. It is more like a system that promotes recycling through a rewards. For each plastic bottle/can or trash that is disposed using the iTrash machine, you will get monetary reward through your Taipei Easycard, or 悠遊卡 (Yoyo card). Since this card’s usage is widely implemented and usable in the city, you can use it virtually everywhere – from convenience store to public transport and whatnot.
