The Xiaomi Mi 10 was launched more than a week ago – it’s old news by now. One thing that stood out to me is that Xiaomi themselves has disclosed that they will be using the next-generation GaN chargers for the Mi 10.
These GaN chargers aren’t exactly new – but they’re just starting to get mainstream now.
Let’s summarize a little. GaN here is a composite material consisting of gallium and nitride, which is a form of a semiconductor. GaN replaces silicon as the substrate, and it unlocks a few new potentials in semiconductors – particularly, power output.
Nowadays, we’ve come to expect a certain size for power supplies that we’re using.
However, gallium is much more expensive compared to silicon when it comes to the raw material prices, so the adoption rate of GaN-based chargers might take some time.
