Not long ago, we saw the release of the TUF Gaming series of laptops. TUF Gaming was actually originated from their rebranding of TUF series motherboards to budget-oriented “gaming” motherboards, and was then mimicked into the gaming laptop lineup as a spinoff brand. ASUS TUF Gaming laptops are focused on the budget gaming laptop lineup – and we managed to take a sneak peek of the TUF Gaming FX505 during our trip to Taipei.

TUF Gaming is not a part of ROG by the way. Ignore the ROG logo in the background.

Finally ASUS puts a TUF Gaming logo on the TUF Gaming laptop.

As the name implies, the TUF Gaming FX505 is the 15.6-inch version, whereas the FX705 is the 17.3-inch version. I actually like ASUS’s laptop naming scheme. The TUF Gaming FX505 and FX705 feature up to Intel Core i7-8750H processors and up to NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 with 144Hz NanoEdge displays.

Both the FX505 and FX705 feature up to 32GB of DDR4 2666MHz RAM, a 512GB PCIe SSD, and a 1TB FireCuda solid-state hybrid drive (SSHD) for to store your games and files.

FX505 and FX705 both also feature FHD IPS-level NanoEdge displays with refresh rates up to 144Hz and has a matte non-reflective coating for better outdoor use. The display panel covers the entire sRGB color gamut and produce vivid colors even at wide viewing angles. The NanoEdge design features significantly slimmer side bezels than traditional laptops, thus making the laptop smaller in terms of footprint.

Webcam is at the top – which is good.

The keyboards have an ample 1.8mm of key travel, and exclusive ASUS Overstroke technology raises the actuation point higher in the stroke to improve responsiveness. Inspired by desktop keyboards, the key caps are dished, the arrow keys are isolated, and defined gaps make the function keys easier to find. Backlighting comes in customizable RGB or a red glow that matches the chassis accents.

And yes, the TUF Gaming FX505 comes in a total of 3 different designs – Gold Steel, Red Fusion, and Red Matter. The FX705 only comes in two designs – which is Gold Steel and Red Matter. Not sure what’s the exact difference, but we presume that the specs are tiered according to the design.

As for audio, both the TUF Gaming FX505 and FX705 come with DTS Headphone:X technology that is integrated. Be it headphones or speakers, preset profiles for games, movies, music, and sports can produce tailored audio experiences for every situation.

One particularly great feature in both the FX505 and FX705 is the presence of a gigabit Ethernet port as well as Intel’s latest 2×2 MIMO 802.11ac Wave 2 WiFi for connection speeds up to 1.73Gbps with compatible routers. Both laptops have HDMI ports for connecting additional displays and two USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports and one USB 2.0 port for peripherals.

The FX505 and FX705 also feature HyperCool system, with independent fans and heatsinks to cool the CPU and GPU separately. The design also places the fans directly underneath the keyboard to help remove heat, keeping the keyboard cool and comfortable during extended gameplay sessions. The patented trapezoid-cut lid allows more air to be ejected from the rear, improving cooling performance by up to 25% over other designs.

Cooling performance can degrade over time, with dust and particle build-up impeding airflow through thermal fins: patented ASUS dust tunnels help to guide dust and particles off to a separate chamber to be ejected from the system, keeping the thermal fins clear for stable long-term cooling performance.

Prices and availability are still up in the air, but we think that the new ASUS TUF Gaming FX505 and FX705 will be adopted in the mass market.
