ASUS Malaysia has revealed the latest ROG Phone 5 series gaming smartphone for this year, coming in flavors of the Base, Pro, and Ultimate models.
The main attraction of the latest ROG Phone generation is not only the strongest hardware to date but also the debut of Qualcomm Game Quick Touch that overclocks the sampling rate for lower latency and quicker responsiveness. And from what we have known about the Snapdragon 888 chipset from our Mi 11 review, this thing can get really hot and uncomfortable but the new AeroActive Cooler 5 is here to save the day that can take away as much as 10°C off the CPU die to let you game all-day long.
Other notable features have been optimized and improved upon such as the AirTrigger and GameFX audio system to create the best in class smartphone that may be able to defeat the most demanding mobile games to date (Hello there Genshin).
Here’s the summarized spec list for all 3 models with balls-to-the-walls performance on the table. Heck, the Ultimate model has more RAM than my desktop PC.
- 6.78-inch AMOLED display
- 1080p resolution
- 144Hz refresh rate, 300Hz sampling rate, 1ms response time
- HDR10+ certified
- Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protected
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset
- Up to 16GB RAM (18GB for Ultimate)
- Up to 256GB storage (512GB for Pro and Ultimate)
- Triple rear-facing cameras
- Main: 64MP
- Ultra-wide angle: 13MP
- Macro: 5MP
- 24MP selfie camera
- 6,000mAh battery
- 65W wired charger
- Steady Charge, Scheduled Charge, Maximum Limit Charge profiles
- Headphone jack (yes, it’s a feature)
- Phantom Black, Storm White colors (Phantom Black ONLY for Pro, Storm White ONLY for Ultimate)
As a side note, the base model will not have the ROG Vision which is the gradient changing matrix display on the back while the Pro model will rock an RGB version to compliment the dark base color and the Ultimate model features a monochrome version for a sleek and sharp look.
We also tested the ROG Phone 5’s gaming performance – and it’s safe to say that this gaming phone with the Snapdragon 888 means serious gaming and doesn’t overheat or thermal throttle. Even though it says as high as 56°C, the phone doesn’t feel as hot as the Mi 11 when I’m playing Genshin Impact.
By the way, we also did a huge unboxing of the ROG Phone 5 alongside 4 new accessories that were announced together. It’s a rather long unboxing, too.
