Alright, before you start saying that the price of this smartphone is insanely high (which I understand), I urge you to read through these few points about the ASUS ZenFone AR before making any conclusive judgment.

  • The ASUS ZenFone AR comes with a 1-year one-to-one exchange warranty policy. Even has a “pick-up and return” service hotline.
  • World’s first Google Tango (AR) + Google Daydream (VR) in a single smartphone.
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 + 8GB RAM + 128GB storage

Now, let’s talk about the specs first. The all new ASUS ZenFone AR is a 5.7-inch device with a 1440p Super AMOLED display. This is important for the sharpest, clearest, and most vivid display for AR and VR. Then comes the unique AR cameras.

Yes – cameras. There are a total of 3 cameras in the ASUS ZenFone AR, which is aptly named the ASUS TriCam system. It has a main 23MP PixelMaster 3.- camera, a motion-tracking camera, and another depth-sensing camera by using lasers. This meets Google’s specifications for Tango. The main camera is powered by a Sony IMX318 sensor and has an aperture of f/2.0, 4-axis OIS, 3x zoom. Even comes with ASUS’s TriTech autofocusing technology too.

As for selfies, the ASUS ZenFone AR has an 8MP front-facing camera with 85 degree wide-angle lens.

So what’s powering all of these hardware? ASUS opted for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 clocked at 2.4GHz, Adreno 530 graphics (this is important as AR and VR literally strains it to its core), a supermassive 8GB amount of RAM, 128GB of storage (which ASUS promised it’s UFS 2.0), and all of these are juiced up by a 3,300mAh battery that supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0.

Other than that, the ASUS ZenFone AR also emphasizes on audio, as it has Hi-Res Audio certification, NXP smart amplifier, and also DTS virtual surround. For those who like to stream content via WiFi, the ASUS ZenFone AR also comes with dual-band AC 2×2 MIMO WiFi to ensure speed and stability.

To be honest, I don’t think the battery life will last long on this smartphone. Furthermore, what’s up with the front-facing home button fingerprint sensor? That needs to be moved to the back, though I understand that the back of the ASUS ZenFone AR is pretty much crowded with sensors and cameras.

The ASUS ZenFone AR will be available soon – presumably 12th July – at authorized retailers and on Lazada, priced at RM3,799. You’ll also get the Google Cardboard, Screen Protector, Silicon Case for free!
