It’s not a surprise to hear that foldable phones are coming this year. This is not something new, as we’ve already seen bendable AMOLED displays back at CES 2013. Yes – it’s an old technology but it’s not easy to mass-manufacture and prime it for the consumer market. Fast forward 5 years, and DJ Koh, CEO of the Samsung mobile division, tells CNBC that the foldable smartphone will be in the market soon.

Samsung is set to unveil a foldable smartphone this year from CNBC.

Now, we don’t quite yet know the design or the specs or even the screen resolution of the foldable phone as of now. For all we know, it’s a phone that has a foldable screen and quoting what DJ Koh said, the development process is “complicated” and has only “nearly concluded” said process.

Koh also said that more details of the foldable smartphone could be revealed during Samsung Developer Conference in November this year. However there is no word on the availability or expected price.

DJ Koh also said that “it’s time to deliver” the foldable smartphone to the market, to which Samsung says there is a demand according to their consumer survey. The question is, how much will a smartphone with a foldable screen cost? Moreover, how will the industry react to such radical change in smartphone interaction?

On a side note, Samsung is also expected to release another foldable device – but it’s a laptop. According to The Verge, Lee Min-cheol, the vice president at marketing for PCs at Samsung, was quoted saying this at a laptop event in South Korea:

Like foldable smartphones, Samsung is collaborating with display makers to develop laptops with foldable displays that will not just simply fold in and out but create new value and user experience, amid the changing market trends for laptops.
