Dell Technologies has introduced the new Dell EMC PowerProtect DP series and PowerProtect Data Manager software suite that focuses on helping customers to protect, manage and recover data from traditional and modern applications across core data centers, edge locations, and public clouds.
The adaptation of cloud applications and edge computing has increased the challenges customers face in terms of managing and protecting their data due to disruptions brought by the pandemic. The majority of involved companies also believed that by investing in emerging technologies, other data issues that may arise from these new technologies will lead to increased cyber threats as well. As such, Dell Technologies are confident that the new PowerProtect offerings have the ability to solve these problems effectively.
For the hardware, the PowerProtect DP series appliances are capable of processing at high levels of performance towards workloads related to backup, recovery, replication, deduplication, disaster recovery, and long-term retention with the following key advantages.
- Extreme performance: Delivers up to 38% faster backups and up to 45% faster restores with up to 50% greater IOPS3 (Input/Output Operations Per Second), compared to the previous generation, allowing customers to quickly and easily recover critical data.
- Greater efficiency: Provides up to 1 petabyte of usable capacity with 30% more logical capacity, with up to 65:1 data reduction, enabling customers to store more data in the same space with more cost-effective systems.
- Energy savings: Consumes up to 23% less power than the previous generation, delivering significant energy and cost-savings.
Meanwhile, the Dell EMC PowerProtect Cyber Recovery software is an on-premises turnkey data vaulting solution to receive a Sheltered Harbor endorsement that is part of a non-profit industry-led initiative dedicated to enhancing the stability and resiliency of the financial sector in the wake of increased cyber-attacks which is the 1st in its category. It basically functions as security software and analytics backend with machine learning capabilities to help customers to monitor and ensure the continued quality and integrity of their data
For those running a virtual environment such as VMware and Kubernetes, it is completely compatible with them such as in-cloud workloads in Microsoft Azure and AWS while those that are a step ahead that runs VMware Tanzu, good news for them as the PowerProtect Data Manager can be integrated directly as well to provide native vCenter Storage Policy Based Management integration for VM protection. For VMware vSphere environments, the data protection policies will guarantee the Cloud Foundation infrastructure layer to be properly accessed and well-guarded against threats.
Containerized modern applications with agentless, application-consistent protection of open source databases, including PostgreSQL and Apache Cassandra in Kubernetes environments, can enjoy now the features of PowerProtect Data Manager for Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) and Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) to back up Kubernetes cluster-level resources.
Availability
The Dell EMC PowerProtect DP series appliances DP4400, DP5400, DP5900, DP8900 will become available globally starting December 2020 while the enhancements made to the PowerProtect Data Manager is available right now.
