The partner they are teaming up with is the Australia-based conservation organization Citizens of The Great Barrier Reef with the tech company supplying both necessary hardware and software to more quickly and accurately analyze reconnaissance images collected from the Great Barrier Reef during the next phase of the Great Reef Census (GRC).

Specifically compared to the older times when around 13,000 images took 1,516 hours to review, by using the power of deep learning analysis, the task can be shortened to less than 200 hours – a major improvement in efficiency.

With such an immense increase in the speed of getting the job done, Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef founder Andy Ridley hopes that by enabling Dell’s repeatable and scalable edge solution and deep learning model, other parts of the world can benefit from this cause as well.

As a matter of fact, the first trial sites outside Australia will be our neighbor Indonesia.

The initiative was launched to strive for Dell Technologies’ environmental, social, and governance (ESG) ambitions to advance sustainability, by creating technology that drives progress and working with customers, partners, suppliers, and communities to enable climate action. By using the company’s world-class edge solution deployed on watercraft, the process of image analysis can be sped up while the power of machine learning will help human users determine the status of the reefs.
