The day of 5G is coming – and Digi is doing all that it can to demonstrate the power of 5G through a few high-speed usages that require truly low-latency transmission. One of these applications is to have some sort of real-time virtual tourism.
Malaysian Finance Minister, Lim Guan Eng, had the opportunity to experience a livestream of Malaysia’s first 5G-powered real-time virtual tourism use case, hosted by Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (Digi) at Langkawi International Airport.
With 5G’s low-latency and high-speed transmission, Lim literally experienced a 360° view of Gunung Machinchang using a VR headset from about 500 kilometers away – which is at Cyberjaya. This was only as a part of a tour of Rekascape, where the 5G OpenLab by Digi and Cyberview was set up.
The 360° view was set up at the Langkawi International Airport to have visitors enjoy a livestream of Gunung Machinchang from a camera mounted at the Langkawi SkyCab middle station. With tourism, this show case is one of the many different possibilities of how 5G can be utilized.
The demonstration is open to the public until March 2020, and the virtual tourism experience was created in collaboration with Malaysia Airports and Panorama Langkawi and is part of Digi’s use case in the 5G Demonstration Project (5GDP). The 5GDP showcase in Langkawi is part of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC)’s efforts to facilitate, develop and foster 5G use cases in a live but controlled environment.
Previously, the Malaysian Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir, also witnessed real-time medical data transfer through Digi’s 5G. Paramedics inside the ambulances were able to communicate and provide data to doctors at Hospital Sultanah Maliha Langkawi during an emergency state.
It sure is interesting – and I really want to see if 5G can enable me to play games on Google Stadia. Or at least stream 4K 60fps videos smoothly.
