Samsung’s QLED TV is a brand new technology for TVs where it’s actually benefiting from OLED and LCD display technologies. We got the chance to attend an experience session at Samsung Express Service Centre at Mutiara Damansara where the new Samsung QLED TV is complemented with Harman Kardon soundbars.

Q Picture

Samsung QLED
The fundamental difference in OLED and QLED is how colors are products. QLEDs are still quantum dots – and as we all know, quantum dots are vibrant in colors and yet quite efficient when it comes to power draw. How quantum dots work is rather similar to lasers. These quantum dots do not emit light, and requires something else to “charge” it with energy, so it can achieve a higher, unstable energy state level. After that, it will “drop” back to its stable energy level once again, emitting light. That’s why Samsung’s QLED TVs requires a backlight, and the backlight functions as the “charger”. This is different from OLED as OLEDs itself will emit light, eliminating the need for any backlight and can make the display panel even thinner than before. Samsung also introduced an upscaling technology called Q Engine, where it use AI to upscale through a 5-step algorithm.  It goes through Image Signal Analysis > Noise Reduction > Improved first details > 4K upscaling > Improved second details, the technology could even seamlessly upscale SD (480p) content to 4K UHD. Of course, upscaling technology is not something new, but to be able to upscale from SD to UHD is something remarkable.

Q Style

Samsung is really pushing its display technology forward too as they show off the new flagship, the Q9F, that has a “no gap wall-mount” technology and only one single connector is needed to connect the display panel with its control box. That helps alleviate the bulk of the TV, and enables some fancy mounting style.

Since the control panel is moved away from the TV, it’s much more easier to access the cables and everything else without having to touch the display panel at all. Imagine this – I have a wall-mounted 55-inch TV that I have to call someone to help me take out the TV from the wall so that I can attach some cables at the back.

Q Smart

With the constant growth in smart phone integration, the QLED TVs work with Samsung’s SmartThings as well. You can control the other Samsung-powered household items while using the TV – because why not?

Samsung x Harman Kardon

The recently launched Samsung | Harman Kardon soundbar, the HW-N950, which was also demonstrated during the experience session. It’s a unique soundbar which is configured in a 7.1.4 channel. The 7 means a total of 7 horizontal sound directions – center, front left, front right, left, right, rear left and rear right; The 1 means the single subwoofer; The 4 means a total of 4 upward-firing speakers – front left, front right, rear left and rear right. Virtual surround sound will never beat real, physical speakers.
