We’ve seen many smartphones in the past from big brands like Samsung, Huawei, ASUS, Lenovo, and many more. They do offer budget-oriented devices – but General Mobile’s smartphones are specifically made with Google’s Android One standards. Take it as a “budget vanilla optimized experience”, if that makes any sense. General Mobile’s GM 5 Plus is one of the Android One smartphones.
If you don’t already know what Google’s Android One is about, then let me explain. In short, it’s like Google’s Nexus lineup of smartphones but made for entry-level users and growing markets. These smartphones are also promised to have guaranteed one OS upgrade and have the latest and technology and security measures.
General Mobile is a smartphone company from Turkey, and they’re launching the GM 5 Plus here in Malaysia. The GM 5 Plus looks awfully familiar if you know what I mean.
In terms of specs, the GM 5 Plus has a 5.5-inch 1080p IPS LTPS display with Corning Gorilla Glass 4, Snapdragon 617 chipset with an octa-core processor, 13MP rear-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture and a 13MP selfie camera. All of these are juiced up by a 3,100mAh battery.
What’s most important about Android One smartphones is the software. As these Android One smartphones tout to be “Google-optimized smartphones”, the GM 5 Plus is running Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box.
The GM 5 Plus is available starting mid-July, and is priced at RM899.
