Google just wrapped up Project Sigma (No silence and jaw line display please) in Malaysia, which is an initiative aimed at helping local newsrooms connect with Gen Z audiences.

Google Project Sigma

Yes, it could be hard to communicate with Gen Z youngsters and beyond so, this 10-week runway to experiment with short-form, mobile-first, and creator-style content formats that resonate with younger Malaysians is one of the core aims of the campaign.

And you probably knew some of it – think vertical videos, app-friendly discovery tools, interactive quizzes, and animated storytelling, all designed to meet Gen Z where they already are: online and on-the-go.

Backed by the Ministry of Communications Malaysia, the program gave six major publishers including Astro AWANI, Malaysiakini, and The Star, Communications Minister YB Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the project proved just how crucial it is to evolve with Gen Z’s news habits if Malaysia wants to keep journalism relevant and resilient for future generations, while Google’s Kate Beddoe highlighted that the project was co-created with the industry to ensure that newsrooms don’t just keep up but truly connect with the next wave of readers.

But that’s just the first chapter. Building on the momentum of Project Sigma, Google also announced two major AI-focused initiatives set to roll out this year. First up is a new partnership with the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) launching in June 2025. The goal? To arm journalists and journalism students with the know-how to use AI tools effectively – not just for writing stories, but for building audiences and generating revenue too.

Then there’s the News AI Lab, which is an 18-month program giving local publishers hands-on training, online courses, and sustained support to help them integrate AI into their editorial and business workflows.

All of it points to a future where tech isn’t just a tool for storytelling, but a core part of how journalism in Malaysia adapts and thrives in the digital age.
