There have been numerous rumours about what’s going on. We can’t say for sure either, but I hope it ends soon – because I need to get my supplies!!! And I strongly believe the world of tech has no racial issues, and this case is merely between gangsters and shopkeepers.
In short, it’s confusing. Stories started on the 11th July, where the thug who allegedly failed an attempt to steal a phone from the OPPO store was arrested, but friends came by later at 7.50pm to trash the place and cause a huge commotion. On the next day, 12th July, about 100 people gathered around the main entrance of Lowyat Plaza which is now under lock down, and broke the gate, gaining access. Police has now sealed the place off and is under quarantine.
There were also no proof that the allegations made saying that OPPO sold imitation phones to the thug – but based on the interview by The Star, the thug attempted to steal the Lenovo S860 from the a kiosk of the first floor, not the ground floor. How is this related to OPPO? It’s because one of the salesman from OPPO helped the arrest of the thug.
There’s no way to summarize it – one says this, another says that, but what we know is that there are thugs breaking stuff at OPPO’s store in Lowyat Plaza, and caused around RM70k worth of damages in the process. Worse still, Alienware of all the store got some of the trouble too, since they’re nearby.
Here are some videos.
The fight that began this whole thing.
The fight, from another angle.
This one has the CCTV view from above.
Also, latest news here – according to The Star right here, the group that gathered at Lowyat Plaza just now was from the Pekida group and claimed that the investigation done by police was “biased” and was merely “protesting”. But they managed to break inside and police managed to get them all out.
UPDATE : Cops have arrested three of the seven thugs involved in the OPPO incident on 11th July. They are ages 22 to 25. [Source]
UPDATE 2 : The Star has reported that there were five people injured – included two journalists, at a place nearby Low Yat Plaza. The journalist who tried to protect a photographer from the assault was also injured. Eyewitness said there were a group to 50 to 60 men who went into a food outlet and assaulted patrons with motorcycle helmets at around midnight.
UPDATE 3 : New Straits Times said that the case has been solved. Cited from the NST, sources said that “police had acquired CCTV recordings”. The video however is still not released to the public.
UPDATE 4 : Last update here, this is the video of the theft.
What happens next remains to be seen – but I really hope this ends soon. I need to go shopping there.
