Today, we got to experience the upcoming mid-range HONOR smartphone – the HONOR 9X Pro. There are a lot of differences compared to the base model HONOR 9X – particularly the absence of Google apps on the Pro variant. That means the HONOR 9X Pro is using a more powerful chipset – the Kirin 810.

The previous HONOR smartphone that we reviewed was the HONOR 9X. While there’s generally nothing drastically wrong with that phone, we did say that it is too expensive for its price – especially with the Kirin 710F chipset, which is already more than a year old at that point.

Obviously, HONOR can’t latch only the aging Kirin 710 chipset forever – hence the HONOR 9X Pro sets the company’s first step to moving away from that chipset, and ultimately ditching Google apps.

In an attempt to compensate for the lack of Google apps, the HONOR 9X Pro has some pretty great specs for a mid-range smartphone:

  • 6.59-inch IPS LCD display with 2340×1080 pixels in resolution
  • HiSilicon Kirin 810 chipset
  • Triple rear-facing cameras
    • Main camera: 48MP f/1.8
    • Ultra-wide angle camera: 8MP f/2.4
    • Depth sensor
  • 16MP popup selfie camera
  • 6GB RAM
  • 256GB internal storage (expandable)
  • 4,000mAh battery
    • 5V 2A charger

On paper, the HONOR 9X Pro does look like a serious contender when it comes to mid-range smartphones.

However, through our brief hands-on with the HONOR 9X Pro, we (alongside with Lowyat.net) discovered the camera distortion on the main camera that is very obvious. We think that this is due to the use of unfinalized software as the HONOR 9X Pro we tested were pre-production units.

As highlighted by Lowyat.net.

Still, the HONOR 9X Pro is a beautiful phone. Sticking to HONOR’s tradition, the new 9X Pro has a striking X-pattern for its back. For us Malaysians, only the Phantom Purple color option will be available.

Currently, we do not have any information about its pricing or availability date yet. It will come soon, for sure.
