This is the brand new flagship that HTC is going for. The HTC U series of smartphones. HTC’s new tagline and motto that says “It’s all about U“, which is interesting to note, since they’re building for the Brilliant U first. Yes, you are brilliant.
We’ve actually covered the global HTC U launch not too long ago, and I have to say – that smartphone is beautiful. Also, it’s HTC’s attempt in trying something new. It’s been quite a long time since we see new innovation by HTC, actually.
HTC recently launched both the HTC U Ultra and HTC U Play in Malaysia, and there are a few highlights, which we’ll briefly go through.
Firstly, the HTC Sense Companion. It’s an AI that lives in your HTC U smartphone which claims to improve your quality of life by recommending you what you should wear based on the weather, and remind you to charge your phone at the most optimum time possible. HTC claims that it can recommend you the perfect restaurant to have a meal at. Interesting.
And by the way – it has voice recognition system too. Every command can be passed onto your HTC U smartphone without even touching it.
Second is the top bar thing. It’s a small ticker screen, and it’s not an entirely new idea. The last time I remembered such a thing on a smartphone was a few years back when Samsung tried to do it. A few years later, and this is HTC’s turn to try it out.
It’s 2017 now, and smartphones have come a long way since then. This little ticker screen is always-on, and HTC claims that the second screen will provide fast and convenient access to the things you need the most. Again, interesting.
The HTC U Ultra and U Play are both available in Malaysia starting from March onwards, with the price of RM 2,999 and RM 1,899 respectively. The U Ultra comes in black, pink and blue, whereas the U Play comes in black and white colors. Not too sure why the images that HTC provided had the black colours look a little greenish.

To be honest, I really do hope that the HTC U series of smartphones can propel HTC smartphones back into the mainstream market. While HTC’s price is high, its value can only be seen and felt, just like the glorious HTC One M7 and M8.
