Huawei Mate 30 series was just launched and with it. Most of the focus here is on 5G here since even Huawei themselves are focusing on their Kirin 990 5G version to have better performance than their base version.

Here is the summary of the Huawei Mate 30 series of smartphones. There are zero mentions of HongMengOS or HarmonyOS, or whatever they want to call it. No mentions of Google services as well – so I’m not even sure if Google Play Store is included in the Mate 30 series of smartphones. 🤔

By the way, seems like the X-variant is gone.

Huawei Mate 30 series launch

Huawei Mate 30

The Mate 30 here is an iterative upgrade of the previous generation. It now comes with a 6.62-inch display, Kirin 990 chipset. On paper, the Huawei Mate 30 only got a spec bump on the main camera. Both the telephoto and telephoto cameras are exactly the same as the Mate 20.

Here are the specs for the cameras on the Mate 30:

  • Triple rear-facing cameras
    • 16MP super wide angle camera; f/2.2
    • 40MP wide angle camera; f/1.6 with OIS
    • 8MP telephoto camera; f/2.4 with OIS
  • 24MP f/2.0 selfie camera (no focusing)

It also comes with a 4,200mAh battery.

The price for the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage is at €799 Euros.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro

It’s pretty much a refresh of the previous Mate 20 Pro here. Iterative upgrades everywhere, particularly with the Horizon Display that is just 2° shy of being perpendicular to the front of the display. It also comes with a 6.53-inch display.

Also, the new display comes at a cost – you get curved edge to edge display but hey – there’s a humongous notch compared to other Android phones in the market.

Huawei cramped in a “3D Depth Sensor” there too but lacks explanation on what type of sensor this is. Is it 3D TOF or just a basic depth sensor like any other smartphones from last year?

The new Mate 30 Pro comes with these cameras:

  • Triple rear-facing cameras
    • 40MP super wide angle movie camera, f/1.8
    • 40MP main camera, f/1.6 with OIS
    • 8MP telephoto, f/2.4 with OIS
    • 3D depth sensor
  • 32MP f/2.0 selfie camera (no focusing)

Given the focus on video recording on smartphones recently, the Mate 30 Pro also comes with 4K 60fps video recording (finally caught up with the competition) and it can also record at 720p @ 7680fps. Sounds fantastic – and we definitely need to try it for ourselves.

One commendable thing here is that Huawei cramped in a massive 4,500mAh, which is welcomed. By the way, no audio jack here. Click here to know why audio jacks matter.

And hey – the Mate 30 Pro also comes with 8GB RAM with up to 256GB of internal storage. This configuration is priced at €1,099 Euros.

The 5G version is at €1,199 Euros.

[UPDATE]: The Malaysian pricing for the Huawei Mate 30 series of smartphones are as such:

    • 8GB RAM + 128GB storage @ RM2,799
  • Huawei Mate 30 Pro
    • 8GB RAM + 256GB storage @ RM3,899

Now that’s a huge price gap there. Pre-order starts today (3rd to 22nd October) – and you can get a total of RM1,155 worth of gifts:

  • DJI Osmo Mobile 3
  • Huawei back casing
  • Huawei SuperCharge wireless car charger
