As Samsung just announced their Samsung Galaxy Fold last week during the UNPACKED event, we expected to see more foldable devices to appear in MWC2019 – and Huawei is on that bandwagon as well. The new Huawei Mate X is a foldable smartphone – and has 5G capability as well.
The Huawei Mate X comes with what they are calling the Falcon Wing mechanical hinge to fold the device into half, and has a really long 6.6-inch screen in phone mode. When unfolded, the Huawei Mate X becomes a massive 8-inch tablet.
As for the 5G part of things, the Huawei Mate X comes with a new Balong 5000 modem to handle the speed, although there are no telcos that offer 5G to consumers just yet. The new Balong 5000 modem is touted to have a theoretical download speed of up to 4.6Gbps (about 575MB/s) on the sub-6GHz band.
This new foldable phone comes with similar limitations as the Galaxy Fold, whereby the battery capacity is limited. The Huawei Mate X comes with 4,500mAh battery but supports Huawei’s latest 55W SuperCharge. That means the device will charge completely in about an hour – if our graph extrapolation is correct.
The Huawei Mate X is honestly an interesting device but the price is even more interesting. It is said to be at a whopping €2,299 – and that roughly translates to RM10,625.75. As for the availability, Huawei says it will be coming in mid-2019.
