These two laptops are Lenovo’s current flagship when it comes to gaming laptops. They’ve also revamped their entire Y-series of  laptops to be under the newly-formed Legion lineup now,  which is focused towards gaming-centric computers. As for the laptops, Lenovo is starting with both Legion Y520 and Legion Y720.

We’ve talked about the brand new Legion laptops here before, but didn’t cover its details in depth. As for what I can see, they’re minor upgrades over the previous generation of Y-series gaming laptop, particularly the Lenovo Y700 that we’ve also reviewed here.

Lenovo Legion Y520

Its chassis is the same, aesthetically very similar, and even has the same hinge design. As for the specs however, that’s where things get a little different. We’ve combined them into this neat table for your easy reference.

So let’s have a little analysis here. From what I can see, both the machines are very capable to begin with. Now, Lenovo did not specify what’s the lowest spec variant of the Legion Y520 that will be available in the market has an Intel Core i5-7300HQ with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 2GB GDDR5, 4GB DDR4 RAM, and 1TB hard disk. This lowest spec model starts from RM 3,299. Personally speaking, 1080p with 2GB VRAM is insufficient for today’s usage.

From what I can find on Lazada here, its highest-specced model is actually going for RM 4,809 now. You’ll be getting an Intel Core i7-7700HQ, 4GB DDR RAM (seriously???), 1TB hard disk + 128GB M.2 PCIe SSD (tiny amount of storage), NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti with 4GB GDDR VRAM. I just hope that Lenovo Malaysia offers an i5-based machine with GTX 1050 Ti and 4GB of VRAM. Also, please bump it up to at least 8GB of DDR4 RAM.

As for the Legion Y720, Lenovo Malaysia stated that its price will start from RM 6,099, but I can’t find any information from Lazada.

Lenovo Legion Y720

In conclusion, I can only say this – holy crap the Lenovo Legion Y520 is expensive if you want to have a decent experience on the laptop itself. If both the Legion Y520 and Legion Y720 has the same issues as the Ideapad Y700 that we’ve reviewed here (since they both share the same exact chassis), then I find it difficult to even mention its name.
