Let’s talk about few things. Lenovo made some great advances in technology these few months. I’m not gonna lie either – Lenovo is really crushing their competitors in new ways for users to interact with their devices since the first Yoga device.
Then comes the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro – the first ever Tango-enabled smartphone. If you didn’t know, Tango is a project by Google that started off with a pretty noble goal – to map the room with your smartphone. Then it combined with augmented reality (AR) which turned into a completely different experience – think of it like Microsoft’s Hololens but without the ridiculous headest. Google explains it with more details. which you can check out here for more detail.
How the technology works is pretty simple in concept. We humans have a pair of eyes to see the world and perceive depth. The information from both of our eyes are processed in our brain and thus we know how near or far a certain object is from our eyes.
Project Tango works no different. It has two cameras as the pair of eyes, and the processor will process all of the information from the camera. However, with the magic of computer vision, they’re accurate enough to tell the dept information to a very high degree. With this said, the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro can map out your entire room pretty accurately.
Of course the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro needs a little special chipset to process the stereoscopic image from the camera, so Lenovo opted the Snapdragon 652 Tango edition – which is optimized for Tango apps.
The Lenovo Phab 2 Pro also touts a quick 0.3 second focusing time – and should not come as a surprise at all. Let’s just put it this way – the human eyes are autofocusing eyes already. You might just not realize it. If a phone can have depth perception like we do, it can determine how far the object is from the camera, and instantly changes its focal length to the correct distance so that the object in will be in focus.
Now I have not tried Project Tango for myself at all, but through what I can predict, Tango-enabled smartphones need a lot of raw processing power to take in all of the data from the two cameras, crunching the numbers, and mapping out a room for example. When combined with AR, or augmented reality for short, it’s going to take a heavy toll on the CPU and GPU – which means the battery is also another major issue that is yet to be solved.
However Lenovo took a great leap of faith here with Lenovo Phab 2 Pro being the first ever Tango-enabled smartphone. For them, Tango is a selling point. For me, the two Tango cameras can bring out some cool features like super-fast camera focusing time too. Hit two birds with one stone!
