The grand unveiling of the upcoming MIUI 12 just happened. 2020 will be the 10th anniversary of the version of Android that is well-known throughout the world. Within MIUI 12, there are a few different things that the company is shifting its focus toward.
From what I understand, there are 4 pillars of focus for this new MIUI 12.
Animations
I think it was since MIUI 5 where the developers really double down on the animations found in MIUI. There are a lot of animations, dynamic icons, and smooth transitions that flow from app to app.
Now, Xiaomi has made a new mi Light Cone Animation Framework which transforms vectors from one shape to another smoothy. It is also combined with a built-in physics engine in MIUI to make the transformation more… lifelike.
The rendering engine now also has real-time gaussian blur so that the apps can have a new transparency effect.
Another main highlight is the new Super Wallpapers. I think that some of us have already seen how Super Wallpapers work. The lock screen is an unassuming picture of Mars but will zoom into a part of Mars when the screen is unlocked. From what I’ve seen, it seems like we can even choose which part of Mars to focus on.
We also have our lovely Earth to choose from, by the way.
Multitasking & casting
Xiaomi also paid attention to how casting works. We can now cast all sorts of apps into another display through Miracast, and it can also hide all notifications and calls from appearing on the secondary display. This is a tiny detail that I absolutely love.
And now, apps can also work in a floating menu, much like how Samsung has it in One UI.
Universal dark mode
I think this is very important for some of us users. The new universal dark mode extends to apps which aren’t yet supported by dark mode too. For example – Facebook. The team showed this screenshot on stage and I’m happy that the developers of MIUI took heed of this.
Enhanced privacy protection
One major concern nowadays is – of course – privacy. Xiaomi developed MIUI 12 to have yet another step to only have apps use a selected number of permissions only while running. Else, those apps do not have the permissions.
Coming to you this June!
At the end of June, MIUI 12 will have its first round of 5 devices getting the new update first. Other phones will come in round 2, but we’re unsure when that will be. Either way, the update extends to devices as old as the Mi Note 3, which was announced nearly 3 years ago.
