I have to admit – I’m one of those people who were excited about the new Cooking Mama Cookstar game. The game was rather elusive, though.

As of now, no one knows what’s happening exactly. On Twitter, allegations were stating that the game has a hidden cryptocurrency miner. The tweet also states that the cryptocurrency mining will also drain out the battery of the system quickly. That means the game is essentially using the Nintendo Switch as a miner… even though the Switch itself isn’t a powerful system to begin with.

Digging up old tweets, Does It Play stated that the new Cooking Mama Cookstar game has an always-online DRM protection.
A follow-up tweet by Does It Play also claimed that the Cooking Mama Cookstar has its own cryptocurrency and users have to mine for it. Remember – this tweet was back from 6th March 2020 – that’s a month ago from today, and the game was only yanked out of the eShop about a day or two ago.
As of now, there are no official statements from Nintendo or the developers/publishers on why the game was removed from the eShop.
I love the Nintendo DS version of Cooking Mama – and I’m worried about the current situation of the Cooking Mama game. And yet I’m actually looking forward to this game too!
UPDATE: The story developed even further!
The game was reverse-engineered and found out that there was no cryptocurrency involved in the final, shipped version of the game. However, because of how the cryptominer part of the codes were yanked out of the game, it suffered battery issues.
That is because the game codes are no longer optimized, hence its inefficiency.
Still, it’s a sad case. Hopefully the game will be updated to its former glory and have great performance and great battery life soon.
