PICO Malaysia has officially launched the new PICO 4 Ultra headset that doesn’t just do VR but also supports MR for that “2.5D” experience.
This new headset comes with a dual 4K+ super-sense display running at up to 90Hz and you will be able to feel more details thanks to the increased rendering resolution at 1920×1920.
While you’re looking at the screen, the outer side is fitted with 2x 32MP RGB cameras and an iToF depth-sensing camera to capture the reality and mix it with the virtual layer to create the full Mixed Reality output.
Under the hood is a Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 SoC + 12GB RAM + 256GB storage for powerful graphics processing while keeping the unit light and easy to use with as the total weight is at around 580g only. The ringless controller is far lighter and easier to hold as well as the internal broad-band linear motor kept for its refined haptic feedback.
Improved hardware and design choices are not the only things that make the model “Ultra” worthy; there’s this new PICO Motion Tracker that users can wear to enable full-body motion tracking. Powered by the brand’s proprietary multimodal fusion tracking solution, the output will be accurate as well as responsive which can be perceived through popular applications like VRChat, Tempo Club, and Les Mills Dance.
In terms of software, PICO Malaysia elaborated on multi-window operation within the panoramic workspace interface, which can let users freely adjust the location and sizes of various windows. This operation is streamlined by the easy toggle between immersive and passthrough.
All of these are possible by the amount of hardware packed within the system – 4x environmental tracking cameras for SLAM spatial positioning, the aforementioned outer cameras, and further optimizations that reduce edge distortion and overlay issues.
Other notable features include:
- Capable of recording spatial video (2048×1536 60FPS max)
- Support spatial image and video shot by Apple iPhone 15 Pro / Vision Pro
- Wi-Fi 7 Compatible for lowest latency
- 48 MR titles and 21 Motion Tracker-enhanced at launch, backward compatible with existing software too
