Qualcomm has announced the new Dragonwing IQ-X series offering to give industrial computing a big, fresh breath of air.
They are targeting things like factories, robotics systems, and advanced human-machine interfaces through this new release, and right from the start, it is built to do so physically thanks to the rated -40°C to 105°C temperature range, and includes enough peripheral support to drop into all kinds of industrial hardware, whether it’s PLCs, edge controllers, panel PCs, or box PCs.
The Qualcomm Oryon CPU built on a 4nm process is offered in a scalable way of 8 to 12 cores leading up to 45 TOPS of AI performance, benefiting deployments with more advanced automation, better multimedia interfaces, and supporting the latest edge logic with worrying about power draw or thermal strain.
It also supports standard COM module form factors, making it a drop-in option for existing carrier boards, which is a big advantage for manufacturers who don’t want to redesign their entire hardware stack.
Software flexibility is also part of the story. The platform runs Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC and plays well with industry staples like Qt, CODESYS, EtherCAT, and other middleware that’s already common in factory automation. AI is a major focus too, with the integrated NPU supported by Qualcomm’s AI Software Stack, ONNX, and PyTorch. That opens doors for predictive maintenance, condition monitoring, defect detection, and other AI-driven workloads that are becoming essential on the factory floor.
By eliminating the need for separate AI or multimedia modules and enabling simpler customization, the IQ-X Series helps reduce both development complexity and bill-of-materials cost. And with companies like Advantech, congatec, NEXCOM, Portwell, SECO, and Tria already lined up as early adopters, we should see commercial devices based on this platform announced in the coming months.
