Qualcomm has announced the latest Dragonwing series offering, and it is the Q-6690 processor, designed to facilitate RFID applications for industries that depend on the technology heavily.
Industries like retail, logistics, utilities, and public safety use them on a daily basis since it cut down on labor while giving real-time data that helps with decision making. The problem is, adding RFID to handheld devices like tablets or scanners hasn’t been easy. Manufacturers have had to deal with bulky hardware redesigns, complicated software changes, higher costs, and longer development cycles – all of which slow things down and make devices less competitive.
That’s where Qualcomm’s new Dragonwing Q-6690 processor steps in. Instead of relying on external modules, it bakes RAIN RFID reader capabilities directly into the chip. For OEMs and ODMs, that means they can now build sleeker, more compact devices without extra components, while cutting both cost and complexity.
The integrated design also works seamlessly alongside 5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and UWB without interference, making it a much more efficient and battery-friendly option for mobile POS systems, smart kiosks, and handhelds.
What’s more, the Q-6690 is the first enterprise mobile processor to support the ISO/IEC 18000-63 RAIN standard and comes Gen2X-ready (a protocol enhancement spearheaded by Impinj to push RFID adoption further).
In practice, this integration opens up new edge applications, from retail inventory and self-checkout kiosks to medical equipment tracking and product authentication. By removing the barriers of size, cost, and complexity, Qualcomm’s Dragonwing Q-6690 could turn RFID-enabled handhelds into the norm rather than the exception.
