Looks like we are going to see the naming scheme of the Qualcomm Snapdragon X series invading the smartphone segment beginning with the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC announcement just yesterday.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite (1)

With this unified naming convention which I think we’ll see it more in the next couple of years, the new 8 Elite runs a custom 8-core Oryon CPU that clocks in at 4.32GHz for the two prime cores and 3.53GHz for the rest of the six.

Manufactured by TSMC and with the 3nm fab node, it also contains 24MB L2 cache and LPDDR5X-5300 RAM that results in a 45% increase in CPU performance and even better power efficiency of +44%.

For the GPU, it is still the Adreno GPU albeit a “new” one since Qualcomm gave it a redesign that buffed its ray tracing capability alongside stronger performance and more effective use of power.

On the AI front, the new NPU provides a 45% faster inference process and improved power efficiency. With the Qualcomm AI Engine supporting multimodal Gen AI, official info puts it at up to 70 tokens on SLMs.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite is also the first mobile SoC to support Unreal Engine 5.3 and the Nanite virtualized geometry system but let’s just say if we can get the ecosystem to support the cause.

On the other hand, we have a enhanced image signal processor (ISP) that works with the Hexagon NPU closer than before to allow improved HDR and various other “post-processing” like skin tone adjustment and various color accuracy tuning on subjects in addition to things like semantic segmentation and video object eraser.

Connectivity-wise, a new 5G modem called the Snapdragon X80 takes up the job with its 6x downlink carrier aggregation and AI-based mmWave range extension, offering download speeds of up to 10 Gbps and theoretical upload speeds of 3.5 Gbps while the FastConnect 7900 Mobile Connectivity System is in charge of Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, and Ultra Wideband in a single 6nm chip.

And as expected, upcoming Android flagship smartphones are going to use it with official listings showing Honor, iQOO, OnePlus, OPPO, ROG, Realme, Samsung, vivo, Xiaomi, and others.
