Let’s have a look at this brand new, budget-level tablet from Xiaomi. It’s the Redmi Pad 2! Is this a good tablet? Is it worth your money? Let’s find out in today’s video – it’s going to be a short and condensed one. Do remember to like and subscribe, so let’s get into it.

Design

The design of this tablet is pretty simple, nothing much to say here other than the power and volume rocker placement. It’s at the top right corner – if you’re look the tablet at this orientation, and the power button is… rather mushy and there is no tactility. I oftentimes don’t know if I pressed on it or not.

There are also quad-speakers on this tablet. To hear how they sound, watch the video at the top of this review.

While they are loud, I do think they’re decent.

Screen

As for the screen, this Redmi Pad 2 comes with a rather good size of 11-inch with a 16:10 aspect ratio, and a resolution of 2560×1600 pixels. It can also go up to 90Hz refresh rate. Now, some of our commenters in the gaming test video pointed out that the screen doesn’t look particularly good – and I have to say – you have sharp eyes. The Redmi Pad 2 is using an IPS LCD screen.

Not to say that that IPS LCD screen is bad because there are tablets with great IPS LCD screens like the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE+, but the screen on this Redmi Pad 2 is just on a different grade. The viewing angle is bad as the screen just turns dark when we’re looking at it at like 40°.

The “far” side has darkened

Anyway, the maximum brightness is only at 260 nits, and the color gamut coverage is only at 86.11% of sRGB and 66.87% of DCI-P3. I mean, yeah it’s a budget tablet but I do think the screen is just not comfortable to use.

Performance

As for the chipset, the Redmi Pad 2 is powered by the MediaTek Helio G100-Ultra chipset. There are two things I want to point out. The Helio G100 and the G99 are basically identical in terms of performance as all of the CPU cores and GPU are the same.

Back to the performance – if you know how the G99 performed, then it’s basically the same for the G100 in this Redmi Pad 2. I mean, Genshin Impact and Wuthering Waves could run at a rather playable frame rate but they will definitely test your patience.

Some more demanding games like Zenless Zone Zero… I’ll say it’s not particularly playable on this tablet. Granted, ZZZ just renders everything within the map so it’ll be laggy even on high-end devices.

Software

As for the software, it is running on HyperOS version 2.0.103.0. It’s the same as any other devices running HyperOS but since it’s a tablet, we do have a taskbar at the bottom. It’s functions the same as other tablet’s taskbar but there are no customization options for HyperOS. So, whatever you see here is all you get.

It is however, kinda laggy. That is due to the Helio G100.

Battery life

The battery life is kinda decent as it the tablet comes with a 9,000mAh battery and it can last around 14 hours and 17 minutes in our standardized battery life test. While it does look like it’s not that good, tablets generally have way worse battery life compared to phones because of the bigger screen.

Charging speed

As for the charging speed… this is where things get weird. It only comes with a 15W charger in the box and it takes a super long time to charge it from 15% to completion. Do give it like 2.5 hours at least to charge. Also, the temperature doesn’t matter here as the entire tablet is a giant heatsink anyway.

A few more things to mention

And a few more things to mention – the Redmi Pad 2 has a USB 2.0 port at the side alongside an audio jack, and there is a microSD card at the top too.

Should you buy the Redmi Pad 2?

So, should you buy this tablet? Well, I think that if you’re looking for something low in price, then yeah I guess it’s okay for you. However, I personally would recommend you to get something with a better screen because for a tablet, the screen is the most important. So, up your budget more and get – I don’t know, the Xiaomi Pad 7 for a much better screen, better performance, and you’ll be happier with your purchase. At least your eyes wouldn’t hurt by looking at this screen.
