Over the last iteration of iPad, we have seen that Apple actually made the switch to the far more ubiquitous USB-C standard, which makes finding cables to charge the iPad Pro much simpler. However, the latest iteration of iPhones remained at Lightning – but it is reported that Apple might make the switch to USB-C for the upcoming iPhones. Keyword here is “might” because there are no confirmed evidence yet.
Since Lightning came by and started the USB-C revolution, Apple is still stuck with their own Lightning cable. As reported by the supply chain blog Macotakara, things get a little sketchy.

Macotakara says that the proposed iPhone with USB-C has not reached the reference design stage yet, so it might miss this year’s iPhone refresh. That means iPhone users might need to wait for the next generation of iPhones to experience the superiority of USB-C.
On a side note, it is also reported that a new iPod Touch might be refreshed this year as well, as Macotakara cites supply chain sources. Once again, there are no solid evidence or details pointing to a new iPod Touch.
I personally think that moving from Lightning to USB-C will be beneficial for consumers worldwide. We don’t have to carry different cables for our friends anymore! The next step is to make the switch for mid-range devices so that micro USB will be obsolete too.
